Many years ago, in a desert far away from the modern concrete jungle in time and location, a little blonde girl was born to two naga parents. The world first saw her in her human form, but she was destined to protect the many creatures and delicate nature of the Ottoman deserts as a naga. Her parents knew that she wouldn't gain control of her naga form for a year or so, so they provided her with all the necessities and took her on hunting trips so that she could learn at a young age. After about a year, she finally gained control of her snake form, and she began hunting with her parents and learning about all the creatures in her desert enviornment.
Desert naga were very uncommon, considering that most were sea serpents, so they had the biggest responsibilities when it came to guarding their biomes. This was a lot to put on such a young female, but her parents saw a very quick learner in her, so they put her to the test. One night, while hunting, a group of Ottomans from a local village gathered together to search for the naga family and kill them. Apparently, rumors had spread throughout the area about unusually large snakes reeking havoc upon the human natives. Ster and her family hadn't heard anything, of course, but alas, her parents became victims of the hunt that night. No matter how hard they fought, they couldn't defeat the human hunters that greatly outnumbered them. Fortunately, Ster's mother managed to hide her away in their cave, and Ster was never found by the humans.
Tales of the naga snakes spread throughout the Ottoman Empire, and human religious groups eventually adopted them into their tales, relating them to blessings of protection from snake gods and goddesses as well as curses or guardians of areas restricted by the heavens. If one spoke to Ster about her past and asked her how she remembered all of this up to this day, she'd just shrug and shake her head. She's not entirely sure how all of that stuck with her, but she figures that the shock of her parents' early death must have carved the memory in her mind. Another result of the shock, according to Ster, was her genetic power.
Her mother could control the desert sands, and her father could charm a cactus so that it would produce large amounts of nectar, but Ster could control particles of light. At first, she didn't know exactly what to do with her power, but she eventually learned that it was useful for hunting at night because of the stored light in her eyes and escaping from predators because she could simply take away the light from day in a particular spot or conjure a flash, temporarily blinding the enemy. Once she got the hang of the basics, she went on to practice her power even more, trying new things and noting what worked and what failed for future reference. Her lack of activities gave her plenty of time for practice, and she quickly became a natural.
Ster's early history is still with her this day, carved into her mental notepad permanently, but the rest of her history is a different story.
She lived alone in the desert until the 18th century, when the Middle East started to become more crowded with merchants on their routes to cities that were rich in precious gems and metals, and she finally decided to study human civilization. Ster had witnessed a few human events in the desert, but although she was technically a 'wild naga,' she never found the urge to attack them. This was especially puzzling to her later in life because of the cause of her parents' death. The events she witnessed only struck interest in her, and after a while of nuturing that interest, she finally decided to follow it.
The human civilization was not what she imagined, though, and she soon became overwhelmed with all the activity in the bustling streets of Baghdad, so she followed her instincts and became a 'street rat,' stealing from food vendors and small corner shops. Soon, she figured out how to use her power to black out houses and steal their food and other necessities, and she eventually became confident enough to steal luxuries, mainly books. After looking at her first book, actually, she realized that if she was going to study human society, she would have to learn their language and try her hardest to blend in with the crowd. All this time she tried to stay as low as possible, keeping out of the way and out of the eyes of the humans, but the only way to get anywhere in her quest to learn about the human race was by communicating with them!
At first, she listened to others' conversations, sounding out the words and writing them down. Then, she would sit and read through her books, trying to locate letters and match them with letters on posters and signs in order to learn the alphabet. Soon, she could read words and sound them out, and she then advanced to studying gestures' correspondence to their respective words, eventually learning the basics of the common language. Going to school had never been an option for her because she lacked the financial and social status, and if she happened to develop any close bonds, her inability to outwardly age could risk exposure, thus exposing herself as a being other than human.
And this soon became a reality.
School never became a part of her life, but the citizens of Baghdad started to take notice of her lingering presence in the city for the past decades without any signs of aging. Not only was her apparent immortality a curious aspect, but the fact that she rarely carried on any important conversations or served a big part in the community via relationships or service really gave her a mysterious demeanor. When Ster took notice of the strange stares directed towards her, she decided to follow a group of travelers that she heard were going on a 'pilgrimage.'
She soon found herself in the city of Mekka, and at the thrill of traveling, she decided to lead a nomadic lifestyle, getting a taste of many cultures around the Middle East before traveling to another area. At each stop she listened to lectures and discussions about local scientific theories and acheivements, jotting them down in a journal that she kept for her studies. One journal became two journals, then three, and she soon had a large colletion of journals that she carried as her own collection of personal encyclopedias. Her travels soon lead her from the Middle East and Africa into the Asian empires to Russia and eventually to the European territories.
At the start of the 20th century she learned about America. She'd heard talk of the country over the years, but she didn't know much about it until she found herself in England. After spending a few years in England for study, she caught the next ship to America and landed in New York City. Soon, she found out that life in America wasn't as easy as it seemed in advertisements. Fortunately, she saved up the money that she had stolen and earned over the years, so she bought a small apartment and proceeded to explore the city.
Her original plan was to stay in New York for a year or so and then continue traveling to other locations in the United States, but when the day came to leave, she couldn't help but stay. The city intrigued her, and no matter how much of the city she explored, new things always seemed to pop up. After exploring the rest of the world, this city seemed to be a world of its own, all squeezed together into one smaller area.
Her final decision was to stay in New York until she was satisfied with her stay and ready to leave for a new horizon. PRESENT:
Even to this day, Ster remains in New York City. On days when she has nothing to do, she stays home and stares out her window, organizing and rewriting her journals so that she can more easily access her information. She vowed never to publish them, but not because she's selfish, simply because modern scientists and historians would never believe or accept them. Not only do they contain some debatable information, but they contain information about magical beings and the supernatural civilzations in countries around the world.
She feels that she understands the human race well enough, but now she has realized that her knowledge of the supernatural community is very limited and empty. Ideas float through her head about ways to find other magical beings, but in the current modern day civilization, supernatural sightings are very rarely confirmed. It's a smart move for the magical beings to remain hidden, but Ster longs for the day that they can show themselves for who they are without being discriminated against or killed.
